Following more than two decades of innovation in transport ticketing and parking technology, Cammax entered a new chapter in 2024 when it joined the Modaxo family.
Drawing on further excerpts from Julian’s interview with Modaxo, the second part of the Cammax story shifts to 2024. Managing Director Julian Rooney reflects on how the decision came about — and what it means for the people, partners, and customers who have driven Cammax’s success.
Julian reports that conversations with Modaxo began back in 2016. This initial phone conversation got him thinking about his long-term vision for the business, whether to pass it on or sell it.
Fast forward nine years, following a steady period of growth and expansion across the transport and parking sectors, Julian reconnected with Modaxo in March 2024. Within just two weeks of submitting the Information Memorandum, a formal bid was on the table.
Julian was not only impressed with the people involved with the deal but also the speed in which it was closed.
“The speed, professionalism, and openness of the process really impressed me,” says Julian. “It felt like the right cultural and strategic fit.”
For Julian, one phrase sums it up: ‘’My team got me here.’’
When looking at options to safeguard the future of his business, ensuring opportunities for his people was the driving force behind the decision to move to Modaxo.
He realised that as part of Modaxo, his team could grow beyond the limits of a single business, having access to a network of roles and expertise across the Modaxo portfolio — something he simply couldn’t offer before.
“My Exec team has been here for a long time, and I am certain that our people will do better in their careers as part of Modaxo. I think the team also believe they have careers here: you can see paths for people.”
Equally important was maintaining the company’s independence and culture and Julian realised that he wouldn’t be able to achieve this going down the PE route. With Modaxo he could continue to have the freedom to make his own decisions while benefiting from the support and collaboration of a global group that never sells the companies it acquires.
Since joining Modaxo, Cammax has seen tangible benefits. From access to top-tier marketing and HR expertise to shared learnings from fellow Modaxo businesses, the impact has been immediate.
“From a recruitment perspective, our story is much better. Before we could only offer Cammax; now we’re part of something much larger.” says Julian
Supporting customers and partners remains a top priority for Julian, and that means continuing to scale Cammax’s transport ticketing and parking technologies — with innovation at the heart of everything the company does.
Julian sees Modaxo’s backing as a catalyst for faster innovation and smarter solutions — creating new possibilities for customers to expand and thrive.
Having been able to retain Cammax’s independence and culture, Julian sees only positives ahead for the company and its people:
“I made the right decision because I know Cammax’s future is safe. The business is performing well, and the company is in the best possible hands.”
